I had the opportunity last week to ring the bell and receive donations for the Salvation Army for a few hours. What a blessing to see so many happy faces on people with greetings of, “Merry Christmas”! The joy and cheerful people reminded me of the wonderful times I had growing up at home. Christmas was certainly my favorite holiday because the whole family was there… aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. Everyone was happy and glad to be together. One Christmas I received my favorite gift, a model train set. This train entertained me for years while I built layouts and imagined life working on a railroad. That gift is now in my train decorated office. It is a gift that continually reminds me of an event that occurred long ago.
There is a gift that was given much longer ago than the gift of my train set. It is the gift that God gave us to constantly remind us of His love for us. Although it is fun to receive gifts and enjoy food and fellowship at Christmas, I always remember the Christmas story. I like to visualize how wonderful it must have been for the shepherds watching over their sheep when the angels arrived. This heavenly host proclaimed, “Fear not for behold I bring you good news of great joy which shall be for all the people. For today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior who is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11 NASV). Imagine being the first people to see Jesus lying in the manger. What joy unspeakable and full of glory to see God’s perfect gift, the spotless Lamb of God!
During this joyful Christmas season, remember the reason for the season. Allow the joy of the Lord to permeate your whole being. Ask the Lord to use you in a similar way as He used the angels. Declare peace, break all fears and celebrate the gift that was given so long ago. Jesus came as the Father’s gift to the world. Remind yourself to celebrate this gift every day and not only once a year!
