Light in a World of Darkness

You have a powerful assignment for your life! Jesus defined that assignment by declaring that you are to be light in a world of darkness.

Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand – shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16 Message).

That assignment seems so big! How can we ever do what the Lord is asking us to do?

Suddenly, I was reminded of something that happened a few weeks ago. I was checking out my groceries at the local grocery store. The lady checking me out looked sad and discouraged. The Holy Spirit nudged me to be light in her seemingly dark life. I knew this was a Kairos (strategic, opportune) moment!

I sensed a nudging by the Holy Spirit to share something funny with the lady. After sharing the story, the lady broke out laughing hilariously. “You have made my day,” she responded! Her response not only made her day, it made my day. I was blessed to have an opportunity to be light in the lady’s life!

The experience that day caused me to be more sensitive in speaking encouragement to others. I pray that you will also be sensitive and exercise your God-given gifts to be a light-bearer for the Lord. The assignment is big. The task is easy. The rewards are innumerable! Come out of any hidden place and shine for the glory of the Lord!

Yours in Christ,
