A Hard Lesson in Driving

A couple of my grandchildren are now old enough to get their driving licenses. When I realized that they are now driving cars, I was reminded of something that happened to me many years ago. I was a very intense driver. It seemed that I was in a race and nobody was going to get ahead of me! I was under pressure to arrive at my destination as soon as possible.

But then something happened that changed my life. I was stopped by a New York highway patrolman for speeding 10 miles per hour over the speed limit! I paid the fine and thought that this was the end of the penalty. How surprised I was when I received a notice from Pennsylvania. My license at that time was in my home state of Pennsylvania. The letter said that I would lose my driving license for 30 days! I was devastated! How was I going to get back and forth to work or drive anywhere?

Day after day passed as Barbara took me back and forth to work. As the days of penalty continued, I knew I could not afford to get another ticket. I determined that I would obey the speed limits. I started to receive revelation about being in God’s perfect time.  A peace came over me and began healing my impatience. When I was faithful to plan my time, I could trust that I would arrive at my destination at precisely the right moment.

Since that time, I have driven for over 50 years without receiving another speeding ticket. I am so thankful for the hard lesson I learned through this painful experience. The consequences of breaking the law changed my way of driving. I learned to spend my time while driving, listening to Bible recordings, praying and thanking the Lord for His presence with me in the car. I encourage you to ask the Lord for patience and His Presence the next time you are driving. Rather than being impatient with traffic delays and a tight schedule, let the peace of God rule over your time behind the wheel. You will discover a new joy in your driving experience!

Yours in Christ,
